The Best Beaches in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)

Summer – when the sun is shining, the temperatures are high, the birds are chirping and the days are long.

Although we Ontarians have always enjoyed our sandy beaches, many of us are taking full advantage this summer due to the pandemic. With physical distancing restrictions still in place in the Greater Toronto Area, the beach is the one place that is open and fully accessible for lots of summer fun. Lucky for us, we have many beautiful beaches that are just a short drive away from our furnished apartments in Mississauga.

Here are some of the best beaches in the GTA to visit this summer.

Bluffer’s Park and Beach

Ready to experience spectacular views of the Scarborough Bluffs while enjoying a day on a sandy beach? If so, Bluffer’s Park and Beach is the perfect destination!

Created to improve public access to the bluffs, the park features plenty of lookouts and picnic areas where you can take in your surroundings. Enjoy a beautifully kept large, sandy beach with great access to Lake Ontario as well as walking and biking trails.

Toronto Island Beaches

Once the Greater Toronto Area transitions into Stage 3 of re-opening Ontario, you can take a short ferry ride across the lake to a whole new world filled with beaches! The Toronto Island Beaches, comprised of Hanlan’s Point Beach, Centre Island Beach, Ward’s Island Beach and Gibraltar Point Beach, each offer their own unique benefits.

The most popular for families is Centre Island Beach, a beach located in an area surrounded by Centerville Amusement Park, fountains and formal gardens. For the amusement park in Centreville, please call ahead at (416) 203-0405 to ensure they are currently in operation.

Hanlan’s Point Beach, well-known for its relaxed ambiance and ‘clothing optional’ area is popular for those trying to escape the crowds.

Ward’s Island Beach features not only a great beach area, but nearby trails that encompass sand dunes and wildflower-filled meadows.

Gibraltar Point Beach, one of the newest beaches in Toronto, is located the furthest from any ferry terminal. Its proximity, plus the fact that it’s still not well known, means that this beach is much quieter than the others.

Sugar Beach

Conveniently located within the Toronto city limits, Sugar Beach is an imaginative new park created where an industrial parking lot once stood. The beach features pink umbrellas, white sand and striped rocks that play homage to its Redpath Sugar factory neighbour. Even though the water is normally the coldest at Cherry Beach, the area is still extremely popular for cyclists, sunbathers, windsurfers and swimmers. The thin stretch of beachfront property partners the Outer Harbour to Toronto’s Portlands and is comprised of both rock and sand. Its fenced-in, off-leash zone makes it especially popular for pet owners.

When it comes to the best beaches, Toronto, Mississauga and the surrounding areas have plenty to offer! While checking out the area’s beaches, be sure to pre-book a stay at Platinum Suites. Centrally located in the heart of downtown, our temporary emergency housing in Mississauga is only a short distance to all of the beaches listed above. Check out our current special offers and contact us to make reservations today!
